On December 1st the scouts on their day off visited the Massachusetts State House with troop 511. The State House is the state capital and seat of government for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is located in Boston on Beacon Hill. The scouts were introduced as guests of Massachusetts Representative Ken Gordon and toured the building. They had the privilege to attend lunch and a Q&A with Ken Gordon and watch a few minutes of the house in session. The scouts had a great time and were very grateful for this opportunity.
With the start of November, a new role, Grubmaster, has been added to patrols, in charge of buying and bringing food to campouts for patrol meals. The Grubmaster will be given money from the troop so to raise money, Troop 103 engaged in a Double Good fundraiser where scouts set up pop-up stores to sell popcorn. We successfully managed to raise $4034 for the troop Grubmasters and some new stoves too!
On November 11th, Troop 103 supported, honored, and thanked the Veterans for all their sacrifices and their services for protecting our liberties and our country during the Veterans Day assembly.
In preparation for our annual Turkey Feast, Troop 103 spent weeks planning what food to bring, who will cook what, and most importantly, how to be prepared for our first cold weather campout after summer camp. Pack 105 Webelos joined to help us out. The scouts made turkey, chicken, pies, and the wonderful sides served at Thanksgiving dinner. The scouts served over 40 friends and family and ended the night with a great campfire program. Check out the pictures.

March’s scouting topic for Troop 103 is civics! As part of our first civics-related meeting this month, we decided to simulate a presidential election within the troop. The troop split into 3 political parties, and each political party chose a candidate to run for president. These parties were the Whigs, Democratic-Republicans, and Federalists. The candidates were Mehran from the Federalists, Mai from the Democratic-Republican, and Noah from the Whigs. To grow support for their party, each candidate wrote and gave a speech that showed their party’s interests and their goals for the country if they got elected. All the candidates gave great speeches, and in the end, Mehran from the Federalist party was elected to be president! In our next meeting, we went over how bills are created, and the process those bills go through to become a law. The 3 political parties each made their own bills, and we hosted a Mock Congress, with the House and the Senate voting on the bills. Finally, the bills that passed in Congress were sent to the president, who could either veto or sign the bills. One of the bills that was passed by both the Congress and the president, which means that it can become a law, was a band on homework.
Here is a list of some of the activities we did:
March 1: Lonesome Lake Prep, Elections
March 8: Elections, Appointments, Advancement
March 15: Mock Elections
March 22: Bill-to-law
March 29: Mock Trial
March 27: PLC
Camp Yawgoog is just around the corner and scouts are picking their merit badges to complete at camp. Aside from camp at the July 4th Parade scouts again got the opportunity to get their service hours that are needed in rank advancement and multiple merit badges. These service hours will bring scouts closer to their Eagle rank. Speaking of Eagle rank, one of our scouts Aydin Khalifa is on his way there. He has recently started his donations as well as his first session of his Eagle Project. Neil Almeida, another one of our scouts is also on a similar path who at the moment is starting to receive donations for his project.
It's the start of May and Troop 103 has been invited to help with the Town of Burlington Memorial Day Events. Scouts are participating in the flag raising, and the Memorial Day Ceremony. With the Memorial Day Ceremony ending, Troop 103 was hit with another opportunity for service at the Burlington Food Pantry. Scouts will be able to get the service hours they need for their advancements. Additionally, Troop patrols have also created their Troop flags, yells, and calls! The Troop now has a new cell phone policy as well as a new band app for better communication. Furthermore, Troop 103 had another crossover at Rahanis Park to welcome new scouts joining the troop. Troop 103 has also received brand new class B shirts for only $15. To end the mouth off veteran scouts helped newer scouts achieve their scout rank which is the first step towards eagle!
April's scouting topic for 103 is the impacts of Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco as well as everyone's favorite, personal fitness. Scouts will be able to sign off their personal fitness requirements as well as participating in some fitness tests to see how you are as a scout. Troop 103 has also grown throughout all these years, and I mean literally. We now have an additional 12 new scouts to add to our home here at Troop 103.
