2024 was quite the banner year for Troop 103. It was a year of accomplishments in a multitude of areas starting with our first full trip around the sun of Scouting Adventures. We journeyed to new places for exciting adventures including bigfoot trapping, canoeing, and whitewater rafting, elected many new Scouts into the Order of the Arrow, and became one of few Spirit of Adventure Council Troops to go Coed!
Here’s the highlights:
The year closed with traditions and new experiences. As always, we attended the Veterans Day ceremony on the common to honor and recognize our veterans for keeping us safe. This year, we learned about leadership how following is even more important to be a successful unit.
Turkey Feast brought us a new challenge; outdoor fire and cooking bans didn't slow us down; it didn't even completely bring us inside. Scouts brought their homemade feast items to share for our holiday celebration. Troop 103 really came together to make it happen this year! Although we ate inside, we still invited our Pack 105 AoLs for outdoor activities like campsite finding, tent set up, and other fun adventures.
Even as fall rolled in, we continued our adventures. This small group of Scouts worked on their hiking merit badge and mapped and completed an in town 20 mile hike.
This year's Scout O was one to be remembered. One orienteering team came in third place for the Night O, the campfire ban put out all the fires at camp on our second night, and we saw some serious cooking going on all over camp!
Our summer ended with a visit to the past brought to us by the Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP). On our way, we stopped at Chick-fil-A for lunch. They thought we were photo worthy and added us to their Instagram page. We started September strong with a great first meeting and a fun Shakedown at Camp Carpenter where we honed our Scout skills for cooking, fire-building, and enjoying the outdoors.
Whitewater rafting in western Massachusetts was a great way to introduce a summer camping trip that created memories that will last and possibly new interests for many of our Scout members. Scouts not only rafted with enthusiasm but many also created some fantastic dishes to work towards completing their cooking merit badges.
Summer camp at Yawgoog is always the best. Although advancement is great, just being there with friends to do all the things we love to do is a great way to enjoy Scouting. And our Scoutmasters really bring it.
Many Scouts and leaders became members of the local Pennacook Lodge Order of the Arrow, some even taking on roles at the OA level!
Making and celebrating Eagles became an important part of our spring and summer. 2024 brought us four new Eagles. Congratulations to Dylan, Henri, Aadi, and Joseph! We are excited to see who is next!
Throughout the spring, we hiked, canoed, swam, and marched. As always, we helped Burlington at the Memorial Day ceremony first by placing the flags and then by laying the roses in honor of our deceased soldiers.
We spent a weekend at Basecamp where we practiced our camp cooking, took our swim test for summer camp, and canoed.
Although our annual Crossover was wet, we all worked together to celebrate the advancements of all Burlington Scouts and welcome our newest members to the Troop in style.
Our Bigfoot Camping Trip at Treasure Valley was quite the hit with knot and lashing traps, bigfoot races, and orienteering too!
We could be hiking up mountains to enjoy the AMC huts, or learning some chemistry while enjoying our self selected ice cream!
The cold doesn't scare 103. We could be running a sled race or splitting logs, working together on an escape room, or conquering the slopes. You can find us anywhere.
